As one of the oldest traditions in Roatan, fishing is a beloved pastime on the island for locals and visitors alike! And it’s no wonder. With the edge of the reef so close to the shoreline, enthusiasts are able to put their line in the water within minutes of leaving the dock.

In recent years, Roatan has also become a leader in environmentally friendly fishing practices throughout the Bay Islands. This has been done by utilizing fishing techniques which protect fish populations, setting minimum size requirements alongside no-take seasons, and implementing a “catch and release” policy for the annual International Fishing Tournament!

FISHING TECHNIQUES

There are three main techniques used when fishing in Roatan. Our experienced Captain will employ the best method based on what you’re after.

Deep Sea Fishing
The most popular type of fishing on the island! When trolling outside of the reef, our captains use live bait and baited lures at varying depths to attract different types of fish. Top lures work well for Barracuda and Sailfish that feed near the surface, while Tuna are more likely to go for lures at depths between 10 and 25 feet.

Flats Fishing
Just off the north coast of the island lie expansive flats teeming with permit, bonefish, and tarpon. Accessible only by shallow boat, these areas offer a unique angling experience. Opt for fly fishing without bait or try the local secret – crab – to enhance your chances of landing the catch of a lifetime. All in Puerta Azul’s backyard!

Bottom Fishing
This option is ideal for those who wish to savor their catch-of-the-day. Our captain, well-versed in the intricacies of the surrounding waters, can guide you to the deep pockets around the reef walls. Using a weighted rod, you’ll have the chance to reel in the renowned yellow-eyed snapper. Ensuring a delicious reward for your efforts!

Fishing Charters: Details and Rates

For Puerta Azul guests, Fishing Charters are offered at an exclusive rate of $100 per hour. A minimum of 3 hours is required. All Fishing Charters include your equipment, light snacks, and beverages. You just need to bring the luck!
