The People Behind the Blue Door

A Family Run Hotel in Sandy Bay, Roatan

Puerta Azul is a 9-room boutique hotel in Sandy Bay, Roatan, Honduras — five beachfront and sea view suites and four garden villas on a private one-acre estate. We’re 10 minutes west of West End and 15 minutes from the airport. Our 400-foot private dock sits directly above the reef. Fourteen people run this place, and most of them have been here since the beginning. That’s the short version. Here’s the real one:

The Heart Of Puerta Azul

A Vision And A Purpose.

When Talia traded her 400 sq ft apartment in Manhattan’s East Village for a stretch of land on a Caribbean Island, she had no idea just how impactful that decision would be. Driven by a dream and marking the land with coconuts, she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to craft what would eventually become Puerta Azul – a boutique hotel that invites travelers to experience Roatan in its truest form.

As the dream evolved, so did its impact. Talia’s success has also allowed her to give back to the community by spearheading the construction of an access road, initiating trash collection efforts, and creating jobs and educational opportunities for locals.

Today, Puerta Azul is run by Talia and her husband, Antonio, alongside their dedicated, close-knit team of 14. Together, they embody and deliver everything you would expect from a tropical paradise.

Giving Back to our Island

Giving back has been part of Puerta Azul since before it had rooms, and it still shapes how Talia and Antonio run the place today.

They support the SOL Foundation, which works on education and opportunity for local kids, and the Roatan Marine Park, the organization protecting the reef just off our dock. Talia also serves on the board of the Roatan Peer Health Exchange, a program that trains young islanders to lead health education in their own communities.

ABout our hotel

Ten minutes from the buzzing streets of West End, on a one-acre estate tucked between the jungle and the sea, lies a place where mornings are slower and connections run deeper.

We honor the true essence of island living here. Take it easy. Embrace the unhurried pace. Awaken with coffee from the Opalaca region in hand, your toes in the sand, and the ocean wide open ahead of you.

Every recommendation we make, whether it’s a dive operator or a bottle of locally made bug spray, supports someone who shares our conservation-minded approach. Small choices. Lasting impact.

Where You'll Stay

Nine standalone rooms, two styles. Five beachfront suites steps from the water, four garden villas tucked into the jungle. No shared walls, no room blends into the next.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability shows up in the small things here. Energy-efficient lighting. Water-conserving appliances. A free refill station so single-use bottles stay off the beach. Reef-safe sunscreen and natural bug repellent in the gift shop, both made on the island. We're not perfect, but we're paying attention.

Getting to Roatan & Puerta Azul

Puerta Azul is closer than it feels. Roatan has an international airport with 11 direct flights from North and Central America, and two domestic ferries run daily from the mainland. From the airport, we're 15 minutes by taxi and offer pickup for $25 up to 4 passengers.

Meet The Team

Local Warmth. Genuine Hospitality.

At Puerta Azul, the people are just as much a part of the experience as the place itself. From the warm greetings in the morning to thoughtful touches throughout your stay, we believe true hospitality lies in the details. Whether it’s preparing meals infused with island flavors, lovingly tidying your space, or enthusiastically sharing our recommendations,  we’re here to ensure your time with us is nothing short of extraordinary.

The warmth here isn’t a service standard. It’s the people who live here, looking after a place they’re part of.

Traveler Awards

We are so grateful for travel and tourism awards we’ve received. It means the people who actually stayed here rated Puerta Azul among the best, and that’s the recognition we care about most. Thank you to every guest who has left a review and helped tell our story.

This was a beautiful experience start to finish, from the quaint, quiet resort, to the incredible attentiveness of the staff, and let’s not forget the incredible beautiful reefs we got to snorkel and explore. We will 100% be back, thank you Pierta Azul team!
