The Reef Is Right Outside Your Door
It all starts at the end of our dock. The Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest in the world, is a short swim out, and Puerta Azul is the only hotel in Sandy Bay with direct dock access to it. Snorkel it, take out a kayak, or stretch out in the palapa, all part of your stay. When you want a bigger day on the water, we’ve got it covered: guided snorkeling tours, fishing charters, and scuba diving along the wall. The boat is ours and it leaves from our dock, run by the same family behind the hotel, so our guests head out at a family rate instead of a third-party markup. Just tell us the kind of day you’re after.

Spooky Channel
A short paddle from our dock
Sandy Bay's signature site. From the surface you float over a reef canyon where coral walls rise toward you and shafts of light cut into the deep. Sea turtles and nurse sharks pass along the edges.
Uncle Jim's Pool
The closest site to our dock
The calmest of the three and the closest. A sheltered coral garden of sea fans, brain coral, and clouds of reef fish, in easy, shallow water.
Dylan's Spot
Just beyond Spooky Channel
Classic barrier reef just past Spooky Channel. Lush coral heads, parrotfish and angelfish working the formations, and rays gliding over the sand between.
Snorkel From Our dock
Snorkel straight off the end of the dock and the reef opens up beneath you. Three of Sandy Bay’s best sites sit within a short kayak paddle, all on the same stretch of the Mesoamerican Reef. Expect coral walls and canyons, sea fans and brain coral, clouds of tropical fish, and the regulars patrolling the edges: sea turtles, nurse sharks, parrotfish, and the occasional ray. Calm, clear, and close enough to do before breakfast.
Before heading out: Water conditions can change throughout the day. Check with our team before swimming, snorkeling, or paddling independently. Nearby reef sites are best for confident swimmers when conditions are calm, and guided tours are available for guests who want local support.

Dylan's spot
Close to Spooky Channel with coral formations and marine life. Best explored by confident swimmers or kayakers when conditions are calm.

Spooky Channel
Roatan’s famous reef channel, known for overhangs, dark caverns, and coral walls rising toward the surface. A strong choice for divers and confident snorkelers with local guidance.

Uncle Jim's Pool
Sheltered barrier reef terrain with rich coral formations. Often the most approachable of the nearby reef sites when conditions are calm.

Rooms were clean, food was delicious, and all the staff were super friendly and helpful with booking activities. The water is so warm and you can snorkel right off the dock. Easy to get around the island to go out as well they helped with that also. I will be back!
Island Tours & Activities
Here’s something most hotels can’t offer: the boat is ours. The same family behind Puerta Azul runs the tours, and they leave right from our dock, so our guests snorkel and fish at a family rate, not a third-party markup. For diving, we partner with the 5-star shop down the beach and bundle it into Dive & Stay packages that genuinely save you money. You tell us the day you want. We make it happen.
Guided Snorkeling Tours
The reef off our dock is only the beginning. Roatan holds some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean, and our guided tours take you to the spots that earned it that name.
Explore the tip of the island at West Bay, where walls of living coral drop into clear sand patches. Drift the nearly untouched shores of Camp Bay Beach, the longest stretch of sand on Roatan. Or run east to the famed Pigeon Cay, where you can swim alongside nurse sharks in water so clear it barely looks real.
Our all-inclusive tours come with an expert local crew, gear, and the easy pace that lets you actually see what you came for. Seasoned snorkeler or first time in a mask, the reef meets you where you are.
From the resort itself, featuring the iconic blue door and long pier right next to the reef, to the delicious food, to the excellent rooms and fantastic boat tours, this is an idyllic location for a memorable stay. The hotel is in a quiet part of the island but only 10 minutes from West End and 20 minutes from West Bay.
Fishing Charters
The deep blue water off Roatan has drawn fishermen for generations. Long before the resorts, locals greeted the sunrise with line and tackle in hand, casting their hopes into a bountiful sea. That tradition is still here, and you’re welcome to join it.
Head into open water aboard the Jesse James for a morning of deep-sea fishing, chasing mahi-mahi, wahoo, and tuna over the drop-off. Or wade the shallow seabed flats with a fly rod, stalking bonefish and permit across water you can see straight to the bottom of. From the jolt of the first strike to the quiet stretch between casts, a day on the water here is half sport, half meditation. Our concierge matches the charter to the day you have in mind, and the catch can find its way to our kitchen if you’d like.
Scuba Diving
With more than 100 dive sites, Roatan is a diver’s island. Steep walls where eagle rays soar, sandy patches hiding tiny sea slugs, eels peeking from coral heads bright as paint. Most of it sits a short 10-minute boat ride from shore, along the second-largest barrier reef in the world.
We dive with our neighbors at Sandy Bay Divers, a 5-Star PADI Dive Resort just down the beach. Through them, our guests get exclusive rates and fully customizable Dive & Stay Packages, whether you’re earning your first certification or logging dive number five hundred. You stay with us, dive with them, and we sort out the rest.
Not here long enough for a package? You can still book single dives, guided dives, and PADI certification courses directly with Sandy Bay Divers. Our concierge sets up the whole thing, just tell us your certification level and how many dives you want.

Getting to Roatan
Puerta Azul is in Sandy Bay, about 10 minutes from West End and 15 minutes from the airport. While feeling a world away from everything.
One thing I really liked was that nothing felt overly resort-like. It felt much more personal. I met the owners, Antonio and Talia, during my stay and they were both really kind and happy to share recommendations and stories about the island. I also booked a snorkeling trip through their snorkeling tour which leaves right from the dock at the hotel. It was fantastic and made everything really convenient.
