Known for its dramatic coral walls and vibrant marine life, this underwater canyon offers an adventure like no other—located only 1100 feet away from the Puerta Azul dock. Here is everything you need to know to explore it.
Exploring Spooky Channel:
Roatán’s Most Iconic Snorkel and Diving Spot
Why is it called "Spooky"?
Spooky Channel, situated on the North Shore in Sandy Bay, is celebrated as one of Roatán's most famous and iconic locations for both snorkeling and diving. Its name is derived from the distinct, narrow canyon that carves through the vibrant reef.
Divers can explore the deeper sections, often described as both breathtakingly beautiful and somewhat "spooky" due to the dramatic shafts of sunlight penetrating the blue water in the smaller passages, creating an ethereal and stunning effect.

The Snorkeler’s Perspective
For snorkelers, the upper section of Spooky Channel offers a transformative journey from the calm inner reef to the outer reef. As you swim through this natural corridor, the seafloor drops away into a deep, leaving you flanked by towering walls of ancient reef. This "underwater hallway" is a masterpiece of marine architecture, decorated with delicate sea fans and brain corals. It provides the rare thrill of exploring a deep-sea environment while remaining safely at the surface, offering a perspective of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef that is truly second to none.
Marine Life: From Sea Turtles to Glassy Sweepers
Beyond its distinctive geology, Spooky Channel is rich in marine life. It is common to encounter sea turtles or gentle nurse sharks swimming along the reef during a visit. The inner canyon and passages also harbor a variety of cave-dwelling marine life, including King Crabs, Lobsters, and Glassy Sweepers (Pempheris schomburgkii). These small, nocturnal fish are known for their large eyes and shiny, coppery-red hue. During the day, they congregate under coral overhangs and in caves, emerging at night to feed. The outer and more shallow areas are home to Angelfish, Groupers, Snappers and Rays
